Can I replace my BMW diesel engine with a VW diesel engine?

I need to replace my BMW diesel engine and I’m wondering with I can use a VW diesel engine. If you have the knowledge, please let me know. Thanks.

   maybe, it would be kinda difficult as u will need to buy adapters for the new engine to bolt onto but VW engines are made for frontwheel drives and BMW are Rearwheel drive car so you would have to covert the whole car to front wheel drive which would cost a hell of a lot of money

   Find another engine like a rotary engine from mazda which is made for rear wheel drive or some other one

   The only knowledge I have is that it sounds wrong. Why would you do that? Get another BMW engine. If its too much – buy a complete VW instead and leave the BMW behind.
