i want to get a chevy 6.5 liter (non duramax) 4×4 3/4 ton truck. I have heard from a friend who drives a ford f-350 diesel flatbed that ford makes the best and dodge close behind and then chevy, whose diesel engines have bad problems. How accurate is this? because i like the look of this truck and i think it would be fun to drive.

your friend is right
6. 5 was a motor GM designed for light duty pickups, rather than a medium duty engine adapted to a light duty pickup, which is what Dodge and Ford did in the 90s. The GM 6. 5 has a couple well-known, easily corrected flaws, namely the pump mounted driver, an electronic device that fails but is misdiagnosed as injector pump failure. A restrictive factory designed exhaust with a soot trap robs power as well. Lastly, they did not see a need for an intercooler, because in the 90s nobody thought you’d need to tow over 10,000 lbs. With a free flowing exhaust, an aftermarket computer upgrade, and a remote mounted PMD you can easily compete with a Cummins or Powerjoke. Not with a crazy built racing one, but with most any stock or near stock truck. Your friend is obviously a Ford guy, but he is wrong about diesels. The 7. 3 Ford had was a great motor, so they did away with it and have 6. 0 and 6. 4 motors that are junk. The Cummins is widely accepted by all to be the best diesel engine in a light duty pickup, however the new Duramax trucks are holding or breaking all the drag race and truck pull records across the country. Buy the Chevy, it has a far better ride due to modern suspension technology, comfortable interior and far more reliable. And the balljoints and tierods don’t fall out every 50,000 miles.
If you want a diesel duramax its the best diesel on the market right now. I would avoid the old 6. 5 they had issues from the time they started to make them. In fact my dealership would not stock or sale them. That being said 2 of our wreckers are 6. 5 diesels and we don’t have to much trouble with them but we do a lot of preventive work on them.
dodge has the best diesel engine cause 1. its a inline 6 and inline 6 makes low end torque that means peak torque is recieved at lower rpms compared to fords powerstroke and chevy duramax v8s. plus i heard alot of bad things from chevys diesels although not much from ford. i havent heard anything bad from dodge cummins and i heard alot of good things about their diesel
