The Spirit of South Carolina is a “tall ship” that was built and is ported in South Carolina. Owned and operated by the South Carolina Maritime Foundation (a non-profit organization), the vessel was designed to be an experiential education tool for the youth of South Carolina. The project’s academic focuses include: marine biology, history, archaeology, oceanography, literature, meteorology and astronomy. Since Cummins has such a strong presence in Charleston through Cummins Marine, Cummins MerCruiser Diesel, and Cummins Turbo Technologies, it was a natural fit for us to be involved with the Spirit of Carolina project. To help support the project Cummins donated twin Cummins 230-horsepower diesel engines and an Onan power generation unit for emergencies.
