Powerstroke Performance – Duramax Performance – Cummins Performance

Ever since I cut my muffler off my diesel truck my meage has been horrible?

I was told that cuttin my muffler out and reducing back pressure on my Duramax truck would give more power and mpg. I cut it out about a month ago and I have been getting like 350 miles per tank. It used to be about 400 and something… Whats wrong? Or whats happening? PLEASE HELP

  1. Harley N says:

Your vehicle must have some back pressure in order to run at its peak. No backpressure is just as bad as too much back pressure.

Your engine induction system was tuned with exhaust back-pressure taken into account.
You’ve likely lowered the true compression ratio a bit.
Next time, don’t listen to everything you’re told.

put the muffler back on. i’m sure your neighbors will appreciate it. has the power changed at all? does the check engine light turn on? what year is this? did you install a power chip?

The muffler was part of the exhaust system. See the source for a very good explanation of how exhaust flow, rather than pressure, is the key to performance and efficiency.
