Looking to buy a 2008 Silverado Crew Cab 2500 HD. What have everyones experience been in fuel economy. Looking at the Duramax Diesel or the 6.0 ltr gas. have been hearing at least 6-7 mpg more with the diesel.
i understand the price of diesel is anywhere from 25 to 40 cents more. However I put about 40,000 miles a year on a truck-so if the economy is alot better it still is more economical
you will get alot better mileage with the deisel, but here in okla. deisel is about 25 cents more per gallon. so it is a tough decision
My friend has an 06-07 of that truck and he pulls about 22-24 mpg while towing a 2500 lb goose neck trailer. I think hes gotten up to 25 or 26 mpg but not sure. He is a roofer and easily puts on 60k miles a year on it and its now over 100k and runs great, no problems with it at all
The easiest thing to do would be break it down into percentages. Regular gasoline 6. 0Lis rated at about13/18 highway so compare the diesel at say 18/24. Thats a 33. 33% fuel eficiency increase. The price of an extra 25 cents is insignificant if you add it up. Figure gas is 2. 89 per gallon and diesel is 3. 14 per gallon and thats about an 8% price per gallon increase. So you pay 8% morre for fuel but you get 33% better gas mileage which adds up at 40k miles per year. For a regular gasoline engine at 2. 89 per gallon and 40k miles a year the cost for fuel is 6422. 22$ The diesel engine at 3. 14 per gallon at 40k miles a year is 5233. 33$
Overall you save about 19% whith those numbers. My friends 06-07 diesel is stock everything and im sure you could get 24 mpg or better if you add exhaust, intake and other fuel efficiency mods. Hopes this helps and feel free to double check my math.
If you are towing heavy loads, the diesel will do wonders for you. Also it will improve your mileage substantially.
However if your just driving it around as a show truck, a gas engine would be better.
Diesels are meant to do work, and if you don’t give them work to do, the engines get carbon filled, and can get damaged.
The Diesel engine costs about $7,000 more (w/Alison transmission), as you may know, so if you think a few MPG more is worth it then go for it.
The new diesels have particulate filters on them and they have had some major problems (low mileage, filters getting clogged, etc. ) So with the new ones, the better mileage arguement gets the axe.
You will be better off with the Diesel. The 6. 0L gets about 9 City and 13 Highway MPG, under normal driving conditions. You should be able to get low 20s unloaded on the Highway with the Duramax.
