how does idling hurt a diesel engine?

i was talking to a truck owner while we were both in the repair shop who says his truck was letting oil out thru the exhaust stack. the repair shop says its due to too much idling.

All engines develope wear and tear as they are used. Idling increases run time, but isnt as bad as hauling a load at 65MPH.

That’s not true I have several trucks the only thing that it hurts is the turbo will load up with fuel and when you leave the truck stop it will smoke for about a 1/2 mile. the best cause for oil in the exhaust is a broken oil ring on the piston

  3. What to do? says:

Do a web search for “diesel wet stacking”. Too much idling can dilute the lubrication oil with fuel that slips past the rings IIRC.

the only thing for damage is just the normal wear and tear on the engine. the engine will have more wesr than the odometer shows but i thoght diesels are supposed to idle to warm up and cool turbos
