Powerstroke Performance – Duramax Performance – Cummins Performance

Just bought a new Chevy truck…but it has a Detroit Diesel in it?

Ok, someone please tell me what is going on. I bought a brand new, 2011 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD. It says Duramax diesel on the sides, everything is perfect on the truck, it runs and drives great. I got it home, and I opened the hood (I didn’t open it before buying it, it’s a new truck) and low and behold…it’s actually a V6 engine, not a V8 that the Duramax is. It’s painted green. I did some research, and it’s a Detroit Diesel 6v73. This is a two stroke V6 diesel engine.

(that’s the engine I have.) What happened here? Was there some kind of mixup at the factory?? I’m not complaining though…I did some research, and this engine is awesome! Sounds cool too. Should I tell the dealer or what?

If you are happy with it don’t argue, just check the engine number matches the one on the pink slip.

if youre satisfied what are you griping about, oh yeah you wanted 8 cyl’s not 6 I’d be taking it back and asking how bad of a collision it was in, after all it’s supposed to be an 8 and it has a 6?????? big clue

I don’t know what you’re looking at. I looked at that website and could not see the 6v73 engine. Also that particular model only came with a 6. 0L 360 hp V8 or 6. 6L 397 hp V8. I can only speculate that trolls got to you.

I don’t know the whole story here, but I would be slightly concerned. . .

GM sold Detroit Diesel a little while back, and I thought that they don’t use them anymore. Could be wrong, I am not sure. I have never seen one in a newer Chevy, although they were common at one time. But almost all of my work is on gasoline stuff – I don’t do a ton of diesel.

You can bring it up to the dealer if you want. . . Might be hard to get parts for the Detroit – Daimler Chrysler owns them now, so you probably have to go through a Chrysler dealer to get what you need.

If you are satisfied with the truck then you can certainly keep it, but I would be a little cautious if it were me. Something smells a little fishy. Detroit made some decent motors after they got the kinks worked out. If it’s a two-stroke as you say, it may be difficult or impossible to get it to pass the emissions tests for light duty diesel vehicles, the testing is stricter than commercial heavy duty rigs.

    Good luck either way.

OK something is WAY not right here. First of all it would be a Detroit 6V71, not 73. Or it would be a 6v53. This means the engine is a v6 configuration with 71 cubic inches per cylinder. Or 53 ci if its a 53 series. Youre right it is a 2 stroke diesel with a roots style blower(6-71 blower for you musce car fans) but is still classified as being naturally aspirated unless there is also a turbo involved. DDC made 2 strokes for many years/applicarions but 99% were for commercial applications. I cant see a 6v71 even fitting under your hood. Secondly the two strokes were replaced by smaller computer controlled 4 stroke engines in the late 70’s/early 80’s by Detroit, not just equip. manufacturers. The only exceptions are a 6v92 that was altered to accomodate a tier 2 ECM, mostly used in buses and locomotive engines, mostly 12 or 16v149’s. The reason they were discontinued was excesive emissions, and the fact that they were primitive technology wise. The line of thinking in the 40’s when the 2 strokers were designed was that if you had twice as many combustion cyces per revolution you would generate twice as much power. We now know this is not true. See a duramax 4 stroke 400 cubic inches making 400 horses while a 6v71 at 426 cubic inches maxed at around 300. Big, heavy, noisy, bad fuel economy, notorious for leaking oil-any diesel mechanic will tell you this about ddc two bangers. There is absolutely no way a 6v71 meets the current tier 4 emissions standards and I just cant see Chevrolet putting one in a brand new truck. You need to check again or seriously make trouble at the chevy dealership.
Interesting fact: many mechanics are afraid to work on the fuel system of a detroit 2 stroke due to runaways. If one injector sticks open you get an overfuel condition and the engine will surpass the governed RPM and spin faster and faster until it comes apart. One of my mechanics threw a uniform shirt into the air intake during a runaway and-no lie-most of the shirt came out of the exhaust. When somethng finally gives the engine will grenade, often sending shrapnel flying. Cast iron hemmorage. . . very cool to see as long as youre not standing next to it.
