Get an efficent German TDI or CDI car. Better real world milage then a hybrid, much more room, and lasts longer! Yeah you posted it in the VW section.
Considering that engine isn’t even made by Chevrolet, that’s an interesting remark. . . .
You know, it’s a huge diesel engine. . . it’s not going to get great mileage. What is its rated mileage on the window sticker?
The single biggest cut into gas mileage is driving habits. Don’t floor it from traffic lights/stop signs, take it easy down the highway (constant flying at 80 MPH won’t give good mileage), that sort of thing. But realistically, you bought a big truck with a big engine. Good mileage is not really happening. You did know that when you bought it, right?
Go to summitracing. com you can get power programmers there that you can adjust your computer settings for economy or power the downfall is that they cost like 300-400 bucks so they may take some time to make up for. Oh and don’t worry I know that they don’t list Fuel mileage ratings on the window because diesels aren’t EPA tested.
I’ve heard that using/installing an aftermarket performance exhaust system could boost your mileage a little. I don’t buy into using additives, I think they’re unproven and actually do more harm than good (afterall, wouldn’t most car experts know if there was such a miracle product out there or not? And even if it does the job, the cost of the item usually offsets the price of gas anyway), but here’s something that might interest you (though you couldn’t pay me to try it).

I think the best way to get better mileage is to do the basics:
1) keep engine tuned to manufacturers specs
2) replace filters and change oil regularly
3) keep tires properly inflated
4) don’t hammer the gas pedal from a cold start
I saw an episode of Myth Busters, and the episode was about the tailgate being up or down. . . . believe it or not, tailgate up got like 20 more miles to the tank than the one with it down. They say a vortech gets created behind the back window and helps push the truck along. If you have a cap, get rid of it.
Also try getting a programmer. Diesels can be tweaked to get maximum fuel milege. Try Bully-Dog, Or Super Chips . They should have an application that will help you out. Its a little pricey, But it pays off huge in the long run
VEGETABLE OIL AND TEQUILA INSTEAD OF DIESEL
bio-diesel. . . . . it is just cheaper(in the long run)
Don’t have a lead foot. Make sure your filters are clean. For the most part, a few of my friends have Duramx Diesel 2500HD’s and they have been getting 18, 19 mpg on the highway with cruise control on.
