Engine capacity refers to the volume swept by all the pistons of an engine, within their bores, from the top to the bottom of their travel. Measured in litres
Ditto Jez. also the larger the engine capacity the more power it has. But large displacement cars do use much more fuel too. An 8. 1 litre engine uses 8. 1 litres of fuel/air mixture for each revolution (rev) whereas a 2. 4 litre would only use 2. 4 litres per rev. roughly speaking,
The numbers you listed is the displacement of the engine. Years ago it was listed as things like 350 cubic inches, now we use the metric system and list most displcements as liters.
The L means cubic litre displacement, just as older cars had IE: 350 CID meant cubic inch displacement. It is the volume inside the piston cylinders, measured with all pistons in a down position.
