What is it that makes a diesel engine louder?

i have always wondered what makes a diesel engine louder than a petrol?

    a diesel engine compresses the fuel to cause it to explode, unlike a petrol engine that explodes the petrol with the spark from a spark plug.
    so the compression explosion causes the extra sound.

    apparently you haven’t listened to very many diesels because all the vehicles i have listened to which have diesels in them are extremely quiet! but the exhaust has a lot to do with how loud a diesel sounds and also the type of fuel injection system can make a big difference!

    Commercial diesel engines have exhaust systems that are less baffled so as not to decrease horsepower. the more exhaust back pressure there is the more horsepower is robbed. that makes them louder
