Powerstroke Performance – Duramax Performance – Cummins Performance

what is the internal difference beetween a gasoline and Diesel engine?

Other than diesel engines lacking spark plugs and having a very high compression ratio, what are the internal mechanical differences between diesel engine’s and conventional gasoline engines.

Diesel engines are under a Tremendous amount of pressure in order to cause combustion other then a Gas engine that uses spark ignition (DSI) So in order to achieve this combustion in a diesel engine safely the engine must be a Cast block and Cast Heads with heavy machined Pistons and Push rods and Lifters in order to withstands such high compression, Consequently Diesel engines are made to last alot longer.

When you put a gas under pressure, you generate a lot of heat. Keeping this in mind, a Diesel engine uses a very high compression to ignite the fuel without the need of a spark plug to do the job. And as a result of this high compression ratio, you need a way to force that air and fuel in the cylinder during an intake stroke. So that’s why a lot of diesel engines have a turbocharger.
(It’s that cool menacing whistle you hear from a rig when it’s changing gears down the road. )
The fuel is under high pressure and injected via fuel injection.

One of the advantages of the diesel engine is that it can run on kerosene, peanut oil, you name it. (so long as it’s clean) It’s a beautiful thing.

Another one is the incredible torque you get (due to the high compression) out of it. This is why Diesel is the choice of heavy equipment.

Essentially they share a lot of common parts when you get to the bare essential pieces, with a gas engine. The engine blocks have a lot more “meat” between the cylinders as you can imagine, to withstand the higher compression forces.

(This is why street rodders and performance guys love to get hold of GM 80’s era diesel engine blocks so that they can over bore the hell out of them and convert them to gas engines)
