The power stoke is a computer controlled diesel that does not use an injector pump, instead it uses a charge pump and hydraulic powered injectors triggered by the computer. This engine has 2 oil pumps a low pressure pump that provides lubrication for the engine and supplies oil to the secondary oil pump for the injectors. If i remember right it takes between 600 and 800psi of oil pressure to the injectors just to start and gets as high as 2000 while running. This engine will also quit when it gets very low on oil as there is not enough to power the injectors. They did make the power stroke for at least one year with out a turbo, it was one of the first models.
The non power stroke is a mechanical injection motor, it uses a high pressure injector pump and old style blow off injectors. It only requires a power wire to the fuel solenoid on the injector pump to run. They were a cold blooded mother but dependable once ya got um started. These were not available with a turbo but a aftermarket was available.
Both engines were made by Navistar more commonly known as international, the 6. 9 early model was also a Navistar
dscorsic is one hundred percent correct. and the term they are all international navistar 7. 3l v8 diesels. except for the 6. 9l. And powerstroke is a marketing term coined by Ford- due to the fact that theoreticlly the turbo boost in the maniold will add some force to the piston on the intake stroke when the valves are open, thereby giving you an extra POWER STROKE. clever, but not accurate.
Power stroke I know for sure is a FORD name brand . They put them in Super Duty FORD trucks F-250 & F-350 . We have 3 at work.
the powerstroke diesel has a turbocharger.
You can read about it here,http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Ford_Power_Stroke_engine
some of that info is incorrect walt as the ford diesels didnt have turbo’s untill 98/99 where it says they had em all through production of the 7. 3
just my opinion

dscorsic. . . is correct. And the first TURBO powerstrokes was 95. . . or maybe 94. 5. There is no such thing as a true 98 model powerstroke.
