So I’ve been looking at Ford Excursions because I like oil burners and because I like the thought of having the ultimate safe vehicle for transporting my family. Anyway I’m looking at getting a diesel but which one can be made to get greater fuel mileage with a tuner or other mods?
I know the 6.0 has issues but that can be addressed with an egr delete so no need to cover that here.

The 7. 3L is the better engine. There use to be lots of performance parts and kits for that engine from Banks and Bully Dawg. If you can find the Propane Injection kit for it, do it. It’s quite the kit! I have one on my ‘99 F-250 diesel. It adds lots of HP & torque. I run high 12’s with the kit and tuner box. It also makes the engine run much cleaner. If you find the kit and add it in, be sure to add the 4″ exhaust system to keep the exhaust temps down. It’s been almost 10 years since I added the kit and everything runs great. I also had a ‘03 F-250 with the 6. 0, and wouldn’t even think of doing anything to that engine. I dumped that truck years ago, but kept the ‘99.
BTW, my 7. 3L gets 19 mpg. The 6. 0L gets 10. 5 mpg, that’s why I dumped the newer truck.
the 6. 0 is better on fuel, smaller piston bore=less diesel used
Equally equipped excursion diesel, 6. 0 vs 7. 3, if you were to put tuner and exhaust in both the 7. 3 will get better mileage. Simple as that, but be sure to get a tuner that’s friendly to the transmission.
Stock vs. stock the 7. 3 will get better mileage too.
Stick with the 7,3L. That 6. 0L also has head gasket problems.
Just make sure what ever you find in a 7. 3L you CHECK the oil pan for rotting if in salt belt areas. They are prone to rusting and leaking. Once he leak aka a hole. You have to pull the whole motor . 1800 bucks for a 100 part.
