Powerstroke Performance – Duramax Performance – Cummins Performance

Why doesn’t GM put a more serious diesel in their trucks?

Don’t get me wrong I like the Duramax, but it seems to me that it would make a lot more sense to put something like a Cat diesel in there, or a Detroit diesel, an inline six that’s made for towing, like Dodge and the Cummins. I think the best diesel ever in a pickup is the old 12 valve Cummins diesels, if you’ve ever driven anything with that engine you know what I’m talking about. Why don’t GM and Ford use more serious diesels?

They are getting ready for the new miles per gallon requirements and GM has always looked toward the mileage over power.

For every person like you, they can find 10 people that like the quietness and the refinement of an engine like the Duramax.

The cummins B series is the undisputed king of light-medium diesel engines. It did its job and then some. I fact, the biggest problem with a cummins in a pickup is the dodge truck wraapped around it. The reality is that many who look for a diesel pickup these days really dont need a diesel pickup. Thats why they gravitate towards the “quiet. more refined” duramax or powerstroke. Also, Cat doesnt really offer an engine that would suit a pickup. The C7 is too big and their smaller ones were designed for forklifts and such, so theyre not really able to produce the power and torque necessary to compete with the other engines available. If turned up that high they would lack longevity. Detroit Diesel is generally considered the best engine available by most truckers, but this really only applies to the Series 60(12. 7L Class 8). The 50 Series is nothing more than a renamed Mercedes MBE4000 and is unremarkable. As with Cat, Detroit does not currently offer a suitably sized engine for a pickup. Besides, I dont think GM even owns DDC anymore. Chrysler bought it. Dont get me wrong, the output of the Duamax is kind of impressive, especially considering the noise level, but it is an ISUZU. And the 7. 3 Powerstroke was a great one too, but it was just as loud as a mechanical Cummins B Series. The powerstroke 6. 0 was admirable, but had too many injection system problems. The new 6. 4/6. 7 systems are unproven as far as im concerned. If Chevy would offer a cummins engine in front of an allison tranny that would be a great truck, hands down.
